THE HISTORY OF TATURA HOT BREAD
Tatura Hot bread was commenced by John Gibb in 1878. After John died, his children took over the business – John Gibb Jnr (Jack), Harry and Ruth. Jack Gibb died in 1943 at the age of 49 and then Harry and Ruth ran the business. The bakery was sold to K.H and L.H Hutchins of Mooroopna in 1965. After a few more owners, the bakery was closed and was reopened in 1978 by Kelvin and Pat Somerville and their family.
In 1982, Jeff and Glenda Alexander purchased the bakery from Kelvin and family. Jeff had done his Pastrycook Apprenticeship under Kelvin at the Home Pride Bakery. Jeff was the only baker and there were two junior shop girls working for us during the week and 2 junior on Saturday. In 1987, Jeff and Glenda sold the business to Jeff’s brother Glenn and his wife Andrea.
They has the business until 1999 and in that time the business grew with Goulburn Murry Water, Unilever and Tatura Milk Industries expanding their operations. On May 3rd 1999, Jeff and Glenda purchased the business of Glenn and Andrea and our exciting journey began. We employed 1 Pastrycook (another of Jeff’s brothers) and an apprentice Pastrycook. There was 1 full-time and 1 part-time shop assistant. We did not open on Sundays.
TRADITIONAL WOODFIRE OVEN
Our business operated using only a traditional woodfire oven (above) up until April 2008, when we commenced our renovations. The oven is now a feature in our seating area.
